Gribbles Pathology began in South Australia when Dr. Eugene McLachlan established a small
laboratory adjunct to his practice in 1936. It continued to grow and in 1989, Gribbles
expanded its medical services to the state of Victoria. The organization grew rapidly, with
Gribbles Pathology Australia now comprising over 45 state-of-the-art NATA accredited
laboratories and 227 approved collection centres located in Victoria, South Australia,
Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. Today,
it is an international pathology group headquartered in Australia with major operations in New Zealand,
Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.
Gribbles Pathology is part of the Gribbles Group, an organization that has a vision of delivering
a diverse range of quality diagnostic services. The Gribbles Group is made up of 3 business units that are
Gribbles Pathology, Molecular Science and Gribbles Veterinary Pathology.
The Gribbles Group is now one of the 3 largest pathology providers in Australia with over 45 laboratories throughout
Australia. The laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art automated instruments directly interfaced with a LIS
(Laboratory Information System). In Australia, Gribbles perform tests for over 3 million patients per year.
The Gribbles Group employs over 3,000 staff in Australia, New Zealand and internationally, in various divisions and
departments, the majority with scientific, technical, nursing and other higher qualifications. All laboratories work
closely together with frequent interchange of senior staff and testing. This has the major benefit of enabling
expertise and training to be shared throughout the organization.
The Gribbles Group was acquired by Healthscope Limited in December 2004, bringing synergy between the
hospital business of Healthscope and the pathology business of the Gribbles Group. Today Healthscope Limited operates
47 hospitals and is Australia’s second largest private health care operator. It boasts annual revenues of over AUD$1.1
Billion and has a market capitalization of over AUD$1 Billion.
Together, Healthscope and the Gribbles Group provide high quality hospital and diagnostic services operating to the
highest international standards.
